Xiao & Ying | Key West, FL | Engagement Sunset Session

engagement sunset session

Xiao contacted me a few months back and wanted to chat about having a sunset engagement session.  He and Ying were going to be coming to Key West for 2 nights and wanted to get their Save The Dates done in Key West and have a engagement sunset session.  They had been to Key West once before on a cruise, and this time, they were coming for a few days to explore.   They wanted to use landmarks, or tourist heavy spots for their images.  After chatting with him further I was able to steer him away from the tourist hot spots, and give them a more intimate view of my town.

We picked Xiao and Ying up at Parrot Key Resort, and headed to a spot I have been wanting to shoot at for quite some time now.  The palm trees that line the side of South Roosevelt Drive have always jumped out at me.  I like a lot of shots with depth, which gives you that awesome bokeh effect.  We pulled over on the side of the road and set up.  We were able to use the palms and the distance to get comfortable with one another.  We then walked across the street to Smathers Beach to use the jetty and got some killer images.  Big landscapes, tiny asian couple!  I have this thing I call big area, little people in a lot of my shots.  The weather was perfect! An overcast day, but an engagement sunset session that captured the mystique of Key West.

We then headed downtown Key West, and as we were driving I looked over and glanced at the Harrison Gallery.  The light was spectacular, the bench in front perfect.  We slammed on the breaks, jumped out, and nailed a couple of my favorite images from the session.  We even got photo-bombed in the best way!  The best part was the Royal Poinciana tree that was just a block over which provided us a few images, a playground, and a Key West Rooster!

This was one of my favorite type shoots.  A couple that trust me to show them around my town, and take images that most photographers don’t utilize.  You have to get out of the norm to create!  Even if the weather isn’t perfect, you have to make the most out of an engagement sunset session.
